In 2016, the UK voted to leave the EU. The Government’s position is that we will leave on 31 October 2019, with or without a deal.
Deal or no deal, European citizens must apply to the EU Settlement Scheme, if they wish to remain in the UK. European citizens without status on 1 January 2021 will lose their existing rights to live in the UK.
The Home Office has instructed local authorities to ensure all European Children in Care apply to the scheme. And we are now required to include EU Settlement Scheme applications in the pathway plan for all European care leavers.
The Home Office also expects us to raise awareness of the scheme with hard-to-reach families and to signpost them to support. It is vital we do this, to reduce the risk of vulnerable families becoming destitute, without access to benefits or local authority housing duty.
This is an essential overview of the EU Settlement Scheme for CYP practitioners and managers.
