Suffolk Vision - Families are the Best Place for Children:
• Sometimes for some of those families, CYP and others can help families to be more successful in looking after their child
• Occasionally, CYP have to insist that families need to change to improve the child’s safety
• On a very few occasions, there are families who cannot become safe and successful and then, CYP need to ensure the child receives an alternative family life
It is families where children can be safe, loved, secure, healthy and learn. Therefore, our work must be focused on facilitating successful and sustainable change in families.
The overall objective of the approach is that we want children to experience a good childhood, so that:
• They reach their unique potential
• They become socially and economically independent in adulthood
• So that they can nurture their future family successfully
Our way to ensure we achieve this is to use Signs of Safety and Solution building as our practice approach. This provides the framework that we use to support how we use our knowledge, experience and skill to be most effective in working collaboratively with children and their families and their naturally connected networks.
o For everyone to have a comprehensive foundation of knowledge and the skills needed to implement the whole SOS and solution building approach into their practice
o To ensure our practitioners and managers have the greatest impact on the people and children we work with
Not everyone is attending all the suite of learning. The current configuration of training means that people can cherry pick courses, which means that their understanding and use of the approach is not as comprehensive and consistent as it needs to be to have impact.
A lot of people did their SOS training a long while ago. The programme has been changed, updated and improved in that time.New Learning offer
o From March 2020 the SOS training is offered in one 5Day block
o This will be run twice a month throughout the year in each Directorate - ACS and CYP
o Delivered by the SOS Facilitation Team
o Groups will be for between 20 to 40 people, with 2 facilitators

The purpose of the SOS Practice Development Lead Role is to work with teams and individuals modelling the use of SOS and solution building approaches. This is achieved through careful and focused questioning which offers the opportunity for case workers to think through a situation and enhance their understanding and use of the practice approach.
Service Appreciative Inquiry and reflective conversations
This type of facilitated conversation provides an opportunity for all the participants to think more broadly about an issue, reflect on their own thinking and actions, and see and hear different perspectives.
The purpose of this conversation is to have a focused opportunity that deepens our learning about how we responded to an issue or situation, instead of following the usual review framework, where we list what was done, by whom and when.
The hope is that by openly exploring an issue or situation in a collaborative way, different or new possibilities and solutions may emerge that have been missed in the business of everyday work.
This conversation is not a decision-making process, the responsibility for any and all following action remains with the individual participants and services.
Individual solution focused conversations
The SOS Practice Development leads are qualifying with Brief and as part of their training they are able to offer 1 to 1 sessions with people and their networks. These focus on using solution building techniques to facilitate change
